Le prototype des Unités, l'Unité de Marseille, a été achevé en 1952 et sa conception révolutionnaire de ville verticale avec des solutions totalement nouvelles aux questions urbanistiques, sociales, esthétiques et constructives a suscité un large débat international.

Between 1945 and 1965, the architect Le Corbusier planned a total of five unités d'habitation in Marseille, Rezé, Berlin, Briey-en-Forêt, and Firminy. The Unité prototype in Marseille was completed in 1952 ; its revolutionary concept as a vertical city with completely novel solutions to social, aesthetic, structural, and urban planning issues sparked a wide-ranging international debate.
