L'objectif de ce premier guide de l'architecture contemporaine à Marseille vise à construire un itinéraire composé d'une centaine de bâtiments édifiés intra-muros sur la période 1945-1993. Le choix de ces bornes chronologiques n'est pas fortuit. La première de ces deux dates correspond en effet au démarrage de la période de la Reconstruction dont l'Unité d'habitation de Le Corbusier et l'opération du Vieux-Port vont constituer dans cette ville, les éléments les plus significatifs. Quant à la seconde, elle coïncide avec la fin de la décennie au cours de laquelle la production architecturale à Marseille, notamment dans le secteur public, n'est pas restée à l'écart du renouveau de l'architecture française dominée par la réalisation des grands projets présidentiels.
Entre ces deux dates l'espace urbain marseillais va subir de profondes modifications : explosion de la ville dans le territoire avec le phénomène des grands ensembles, reconstruction de la ville sur elle-même avec les différentes opérations de rénovation du centre, modernisation de la cité à travers une politique de grands équipements comme le métro, d'aménagements d'espaces publics, etc.

The objective of this first guide to contemporary architecture in Marseille aims to build an itinerary made up of around a hundred buildings built within the walls over the period 1945-1993. The choice of these chronological milestones is not fortuitous. The first of these two dates corresponds in fact to the start of the Reconstruction period, of which Le Corbusier's housing unit and the operation of the Old Port were to constitute the most significant elements in this city. As for the second, it coincides with the end of the decade during which the architectural production in Marseilles, particularly in the public sector, did not remain on the sidelines of the revival of French architecture dominated by the realization of major presidential projects.
Between these two dates, the urban space of Marseilles will undergo profound changes: explosion of the city in the territory with the phenomenon of large housing estates, reconstruction of the city on itself with the various renovation operations of the center, modernization of the city through a policy of major facilities such as the metro, development of public spaces, etc.
